Tech Stack

React.jsInertia.jsLaravelTailwindRedis

Problem

  • Sending announcements and notifications to hundreds of students simultaneously caused server timeouts and request failures.
  • Synchronous email/SMS delivery blocked the UI — users waited seconds or minutes before receiving feedback.
  • No mechanism to handle large recipient lists efficiently; processing everything in one request caused memory exhaustion.
  • Failed deliveries had no retry logic, meaning missed notifications were silently dropped.
  • The system lacked visibility into delivery status, queue depth, and job failures.

Solution

  • Implemented a fire-and-forget pipeline — requests return instantly while heavy delivery jobs are dispatched asynchronously.
  • Used Redis-backed Laravel Queues to offload email and SMS dispatching entirely off the request lifecycle.
  • Applied Job Chunking to split massive recipient lists into manageable batches, preventing memory spikes.
  • Built automatic retry logic with exponential backoff for failed delivery jobs to ensure reliable delivery.
  • Added queue monitoring to track job throughput, failure rates, and delivery status in real time.

Result

<50ms Response Time

Announcements trigger and return immediately — no waiting regardless of recipient count.

1000+ Recipients Per Job

Job chunking handles massive batches without memory exhaustion or server strain.

99%+ Delivery Rate

Retry logic with backoff ensures near-perfect delivery even when external SMS/email providers fail.
